Hello and Happy New Year! WordCamp Iloilo 2019 is currently in the early planning stage but we’ve been approved to go ahead and will be posting more information soon. If you want to be in the know, head on over to https://2019.iloilo.wordcamp.org, you can subscribe to updates, or contact the organizers to get involved.

This year’s WordCamp Iloilo is going to be a 2 day event with a Contributor/Workshop Day to start things off and we are scheduled for August 24-25. Have an awesome day everyone and let’s make the next WordCamp Iloilo Legendary!

WCILOILO2018 Pictures and Survey Results

I know this took some time, but WE HAVE PICTURES!!!

WCILOILO2018 has been such a blast and the volunteers and organizers are still reeling from all the pressure and excitement of the months before and on the day. But we will do it again next year, nope, we are not masochists, we just love WordPress!

But before pictures, we would like to present our survey results. We’d also like to give our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended and we will do better next year, we hear you and most of the comments was that there was not enough time. We know and who knows, maybe next year we can do a two-day event. But in order to do that we need all the help we can get, also we have to make sure that the community is growing so join our meetup group – WordPress Iloilo

Those are pretty solid numbers 🙂

#WordCampIloilo is Where We Can Now Begin

Tickets for the first WordCamp in Iloilo sold out in just under two weeks. That didn’t prepare us for how crazy the reception was for the event, though.

Every event, once it reached its conclusion, can be considered a success in its own right. On that metric alone, us organizers think we deserve to pat ourselves on the back. However, we’re taken aback by the immense number of participants who trooped to the Iloilo City Convention Center on the rainy Saturday that we held the event. As early as 5 am, several participants have already arrived at the building. When we finally opened the doors to the hall by around 7 am, a queue that encompassed most of the second floor had already formed. Most of the attendees were 20-something people and students.

When we picked our jaws up from the number of people who showed up that early, we thought, “Is this a tech conference or a rock concert?”

#WCILOILO2018’s Awesome Volunteers

Despite promoting the event even after we sold out the tickets, we realized that it’s still muted compared to the events that were happening in Iloilo City during that weekend. However, the number of people who showed up—with some hailing from nearby regions, and several others who flew in from the Philippine capital of Manila—surprised us.

From our viewpoint, this was really unprecedented for Iloilo City, particularly for a tech-themed conference like WordCamp. Iloilo City might have earned a reputation as one of the most business-friendliest cities in the country, but it’s still trying to gain a foothold in technology and innovation. Did we have people like participants living here in our region all this time without us knowing about them?

We can always answer those questions in future events. The more important thing was that we have managed to sell out an event by presenting it as something that is open to everyone, regardless of their experience or skill level is in using the WordPress platform.

The keynote theme, “Empowering Tech Professionals in the Countryside”, was presented by Atty. Jocelle Batapa – Sigue, co-founder and vice-president of the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines, one of the most influential infocommunication advocacy organizations in the country.  The rest of the speakers we have invited, on the other hand, come from varied industries like tech and marketing, to mention among a few.

The topics that were tackled at WordCamp Iloilo ranged from discussions on the latest WordPress developments, maximizing WordPress on third-party platforms, prototyping a business idea and managing the actual businesses through WordPress-native plugins like WooComerce, managing one’s online and social media presence, and beefing up one’s website from unpredictable security attacks. True to the event’s theme, several of those topics were divided into afternoon breakout sessions that dealt with specific categories in WordPress like development, design, and security (the entire programme can be found here).

#WCILOILO2018’s Lineup of Awe-Inspiring Speakers

While we have learned many cool things on our first WordCamp in our hometown (the first of which is that we need to book a bigger venue for the second iteration of the event), we’re just as glad that we were able to meet new people who are also passionate in the same things that we’re pushing for. And we’re only expecting that our quiet and humble community grows even larger the next time we organize another WordCamp!

To those interested in joining the Iloilo WordPress community, you can register for our regular meetups here: https://www.meetup.com/WordPress-Iloilo/.

#WCILOILO2018 Same Day Edit Video

Again, we would like to thank everyone for supporting WordCamp Iloilo and we are hoping to see you again next year. And of course, WordCamp Iloilo won’t be possible without the support of our sponsors so:

thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

WordCamp Iloilo Survival Guide

Hello Campers, 6 more days to go!!!

Given that this is the very first WordCamp Iloilo, it came as no surprise that 80% of attendees are first timers.  So, here are some tips to make sure you have a good time during WordCamp Iloilo, enough to attend again next year and the years after that.

If you’ve never been, attending a WordCamp or any tech conference for that matter, may seem intimidating. There will be a lot of people and a lot of things happening at the same time that it will be very confusing at first, don’t worry though because we’ve made it pretty simple for you to check session schedule. Plus, fitting in won’t be too hard, WordCamps are designed to be a friendly and safe environments for new-comers and old-timers alike and we follow a Code of Conduct and we require everyone from organizers, to speakers, sponsors and all attendees to follow the code strictly. If for some reason, you felt unsafe do approach a staff right away (WCILOILO staff will be wearing a blue WordCamp shirt).

We can give you tons of advice but it boils down to this main one: Talk to people. Anybody at all. Don’t be afraid to say hi.

Remember that all staff and speakers are volunteers, they are not paid for their time and effort. They are there because they genuinely want to help and support the local community so don’t be shy and say hi, let them know if there’s any problem or if you love the event, a simple “thank you” tweet (or in person) is enough. There will be famous people and you may get starstruck but WordCamp speakers are very approachable, we will be setting up a “Happiness Bar” where you can ask questions or say hi.

Happiness Bar?

The Happiness Bar is a super laid back place to ask any WordPress questions you may have. We may not know all the answers, but we will definitely help point you in the right direction. Speakers will be hanging out there after their sessions and volunteers will be manning the table (bar) in turns.

What to bring:

  • A valid ID. Don’t print out your e-tickets, if you have your name on the Attendees List you’re good to go. We just need your valid ID so that we’ll know that you are who you say you are.
  • Something to write with and to write on: Take down lots of notes, contact details – anything you can think of. Just don’t forget to bring something that you can write with and on.
  • Business cards: There will be a chance for you to do some networking and if you don’t have a business card you might miss out on an awesome opportunity.
  • Laptop or tablet: You can also use your laptop to take notes or if you have a WordPress problem you can bring your laptop/tablet to the Happiness bar (also known as Help Desk) and see if one of our staff or speakers can help you out. FYI: We might not be able to help you out but we will try our best to point you in the right direction.
  • Mobile Phone: This is a no-brainer, how else will you take pictures of our awesome speakers and swags? A selfie? A groufie? Also, bring a power bank with you – this is a whole day event and will most likely drain out your phones.
  • An open mind: You may be quite the top gun in your field but sometimes it may take someone’s point of view to help you learn more. Be willing to listen and ask questions when given the chance. It’s not cool to interrupt, we will have panel discussions that will give everyone the opportunity to ask any questions related to the speakers’ topics.
  • Nobody likes a Negative Nancy or a Debbie Downer. The organizers and volunteers gave their valuable time and effort to make the event happen and being negative just because you expected something else will not help anyone. Try to make it fun for yourself, that way everyone will have their fun as well. Let’s be respectful and try to bring a little sunshine with you. If you don’t like the speaker or think that you are better, apply as a speaker next year just don’t be a downer and spread negativity – speakers are volunteers too and they are not paid, in fact they have to spend for their own travel and accommodation just so you can hear them talk about a topic they are passionate about. If something, anything at all, about the event leaves a bad taste in your mouth, leave a comment at the Happiness Bar (we’ll give you something sweet to help ease out the sour taste) – we’d love to hear from you. That way, we’ll know what to do next year and see if we can fix what needs fixing.
  • Twitter account: Tweet every chance you get. WordCamp Iloilo has two official hashtags ( #WCILOILO and #WordCampIloilo2018 ) start sharing the event and tweet pics of people you’ve just met and tweet anything you think looks awesome and Twitter-worthy. Also, do follow us on Twitter: @IloiloWordcamp

What to wear?

WordCamps are casual laid back events. You’ll see tons of people in t-shirts and shorts and everything in between. You can dress up or dress down as long as you’re comfortable. Heck, you can even cosplay or wear a gown or a suit if that’s up your alley. What we’re trying to say is, just be your most comfortable self (let’s just keep it classy – so nothing that will bare your soul to everyone). Oh, one more thing because our venue is sort of “posh” – SLIPPERS ARE A NO-NO.

Mystery Man or Awesome You?

Before you go any further, check this page: AWESOME ATTENDEES.

Do you see your name?
Yes? GREAT!
No? Uh-oh! We can’t have that, head on to our ticket page first and buy your WordCamp Iloilo Ticket

So, you have your WordCamp Iloilo ticket but do you have your photo there? No? Check again? Still seeing the mystery man? If the awesome you is not there, follow the instructions in creating your Gravatar account and upload a Gravatar photo. The image you upload will be automatically used in your WCILOILO ID, so choose wisely my dear friend.

Don’t be this guy…

Be AWESOME like this dude…
